Riga Old Town: Guided Walk or On Your Own, and Which Route?
4 min read
Take a guided walk if you want the stories behind the buildings, and walk it yourself if you only want to see the main sights at your own pace. Riga’s Old Town is compact enough to do either, and the guided options are cheap enough that the choice is about taste, not budget.
The four guided walks on offer
The Old Town walk with a local guide lasts two hours and costs €10. It is rated 4.9 out of 5 from 550 reviews. It starts at the Cat House (Kaķu nams, Meistaru iela 10/12), and the booking page names the House of the Blackheads, Dome Cathedral, Līvu Square, the Three Brothers, the Swedish Gate, the Small and Great Guilds and St. Jacob’s Cathedral. The guiding is in English, in groups of up to 30 people.
The guided Old Town walking tour is also two hours and costs €15.20, with 1,450 reviews. It starts at Grēcinieku iela 18, by the Mentzendorff House, and ends on Dome Square. The itinerary runs Town Hall Square, St. Peter’s Church, St. James’s Cathedral, the Great Guild, the Swedish Gate and the Three Brothers. Guiding is offered in English, Spanish, French and German; groups go up to 50 people, and a private option is available.
If two hours is too long, the 90-minute Old Town walk costs €21. It starts at the House of the Blackheads (Rātslaukums 7), passes Dome Cathedral, Riga Castle and the Swedish Gate, and finishes on Dome Square. Groups are capped at 20, and from 10 participants everyone gets an audio receiver. It runs in English or German, with other languages on request, and needs at least three participants.
The Old Town and Art Nouveau tour takes two hours and costs €30. It also starts at the House of the Blackheads and covers Town Hall Square, Dome Cathedral, St. Peter’s Church and the Swedish Gate. The Art Nouveau part, according to its description, is the facades that stand between the medieval buildings of the Old Town. The Art Nouveau quarter around Alberta iela lies outside the Old Town, and for that we have a separate guide to Art Nouveau walks in Riga.
What the booking pages say about interiors and access
The four pages list only the guide and the walk as included, plus an audio system on the 90-minute tour. Entrance fees are not among them, so a walk past the House of the Blackheads is not a visit inside it.
The 90-minute walk and the Old Town and Art Nouveau tour are marked as not suitable for people with mobility impairments, and the 90-minute page says the route is almost entirely on cobblestones. The guided walking tour is marked wheelchair accessible, but its page adds that from the beginning of October to the end of March the cobblestones are slippery, and wheelchair users should bring someone to help them. All four run in any weather.
Walking it yourself
The itinerary of the guided walking tour makes a good order to copy: start on Town Hall Square with the House of the Blackheads, go on to St. Peter’s Church, St. James’s Cathedral and the Great Guild by Līvu Square, then the Swedish Gate and the Three Brothers, and finish on Dome Square. Riga Castle, the end point of the 90-minute walk, is a short extension. The House of the Blackheads sets its own opening hours; we cover them in the article on the House of the Black Heads and St. Peter’s Church. Look up the hours of any other interior you want to enter, because churches and museums set their own.
You lose the context that a guide gives, such as why a merchant house has the gable it has. You keep the freedom to stop for coffee wherever you like.

Who should choose what
First-time visitors with half a day to spare get the most from a guide on day one, and can then revisit favourite spots alone. If you have been to Riga before, or you travel with someone who dislikes groups, the self-guided route is enough. A short stay calls for the 90-minute walk. If you want a guide in Spanish or French, only the guided walking tour offers it as standard. If you use a wheelchair, that tour is also the only one whose page does not rule it out, and from October to March you need a companion.
Our recommendation
For most visitors we would book the two-hour walk with a local guide: in two hours it covers the Guilds, the Swedish Gate, the Three Brothers and Dome Cathedral, at €10. If you want a guide in Spanish or French, take the guided Old Town walking tour instead. See all options on the Old Town tours page.
