House of the Black Heads in Riga: Is the Ticket Worth It, and What About the View?
4 min read
Buy the ticket for the House of the Black Heads if you want to see inside one of Riga’s best-known buildings; skip it if the facade on the square is enough for you. The outside is free to look at all day. The ticket is for the interior.
The ticket
The entrance ticket to the House of the Black Heads costs €10 and is rated 4.6 out of 5 from 1,348 reviews. The description calls it one of the most beautiful buildings in Riga and promises a trip through the centuries as you explore its premises. The booking page marks the house as wheelchair accessible; if you rely on step-free access, confirm it with the museum before you go.
The house has its own website, melngalvjunams.lv. Its visiting page gives daily opening hours of 10.00 to 17.00 with shorter hours on some dates, so check it for the day you plan to go. The page also lists closed days: in November 2026 the house is closed on 10, 11 and 12 November. Its price list gives 10 EUR for an adult ticket and an audio guide in 13 languages, among them English, German, Finnish, Polish, Swedish and Spanish, for 4 EUR extra.
Seeing it on a walk
If you already plan a guided Old Town walk, the House of the Blackheads is on the route of both two-hour walks: the Old Town walk with a local guide at €10 and the guided Old Town walking tour at €15.20. Their descriptions mention the building. Neither booking page lists entry among what is included, so a walking tour does not replace the ticket.
The view from above
For a different angle, the Panorama Riga observation deck ticket costs €8. The description promises a 360-degree view of the city, the Daugava River and the Old Town from a terrace 65 metres high. It has 338 reviews. The deck sits on the Latvian Academy of Sciences building at Akadēmijas laukums 1, near the Central Market, and the booking page marks it as not suitable for wheelchair users. A viewing deck helps you read the layout of the city; the museum shows you the inside of a single building. They do not replace each other.
St. Peter’s Church
St. Peter’s Church is named in the description of the guided Old Town walking tour, which passes it alongside the Town Hall. We could not open the church’s own website, peterbaznica.riga.lv, and other listings disagree on tower hours and prices, so we give none here. Ask at the church before you plan your day around the tower.
| Option | What you get | Price |
|---|---|---|
| House of the Black Heads ticket | Interior of the historic house | €10 |
| Panorama Riga observation deck | 360-degree city view from 65 m | €8 |
| Old Town walk with a local guide | 2-hour walk past the house | €10 |
Our recommendation
For most visitors the entrance ticket is the better choice if you like interiors and history. Add the viewing deck if you have a clear day and want the overview. If you do not care for museums, a guided walk past the facade covers the building well enough. More ideas are on the things to do in Riga page.
