Riga Boat Tours: Canal and Daugava Cruises Compared
4 min read
For most visitors the one-hour electric boat tour is a good start; take the heated historic boat for a shorter trip, and the panorama boat if you want a bar on board or a departure in the evening. Four of these trips run through the city canal and out onto the Daugava; the panorama boat stays on the river. The real differences are route, length, how the commentary reaches you and the extras.
The canal-and-river cruises
The canal and river electric boat tour with audio guide lasts one hour and costs €10.35. It is rated 4.5 out of 5 from 2,109 reviews. It leaves from the canal pier by Kronvalda Park and follows the canal past the National Theatre, Bastejkalns, the Freedom Monument, the National Opera and the Central Market, then turns onto the Daugava past Riga Castle and Ķīpsala. The audio guide comes in 12 languages, among them English, German, Finnish, Polish and Spanish, and plays on your own smartphone, so bring headphones. The page marks it as not suitable for wheelchair users.
The heated historic boat tour with captain’s stories lasts 30 to 50 minutes and costs €7.20, with 1,845 reviews. Its page says it runs every day from 10 am until sunset and calls the boat heated. The audio guide plays through a speaker, so you need no headphones, and the trip finishes at Andrejosta. Children under 4 ride free but are not guaranteed a seat, the boat is not wheelchair accessible, and it does not sail when the wind exceeds 18 to 20 metres per second.
The panorama boat
The panorama river cruise on the boats Vecrīga and Misisipi lasts an hour and costs €15. It sails only on the Daugava, past the Stone Bridge, Lucavsala, Zaķusala with the TV tower, the Southern Bridge and the Vanšu Bridge, from a pier on 11. novembra krastmala next to the Vanšu Bridge. The page lists a bar with drinks and snacks for purchase, table service, a heated indoor lounge and toilets, and marks the boats as wheelchair accessible; if you rely on step-free access, confirm it with the operator. It also gives a timetable: Vecrīga leaves at 12.00, 14.00, 16.00, 18.00 and 20.00 on weekdays, and Misisipi’s last departure on Saturdays and Sundays is 21.00. Check on the booking page whether it also applies in winter.
The combos
The boat tour with audio guide and Old Riga walk lasts 140 minutes and costs €20: a canal and river cruise from Andrejostas iela 3A plus a guided walk in the Old Town. The walk is 1.5 hours in English, daily at 11.00 and 17.00, or one hour in German, Tuesday to Saturday at 10.00, and it meets at Torņa iela 15. Drinks on board are optional and paid on site. The page marks it as not suitable for people with back problems or for wheelchair users.
The boat and electric bus combo lasts 95 minutes and costs €25: a 50-minute cruise with audio guide, then a 45-minute ride through the Old Town on an electric bus, also with audio guide. You choose the bus time when you arrive for the boat; it leaves from Torņa iela 4 every hour from 9.00 to 18.00. The description promises a drink; check the list of inclusions on the booking page before you count on it.
Which one for whom
| Option | Length | Route | Commentary | Notable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric boat with audio guide | 1 hour | Canal and Daugava | Audio guide on your smartphone | Electric boat, 12 languages |
| Heated historic boat | 30–50 minutes | Canal and Daugava | Audio through a speaker | Heated, 10 am to sunset |
| Vecrīga and Misisipi panorama cruise | 1 hour | Daugava only | – | Bar, indoor lounge, evening departures |
| Boat plus Old Town walk | 140 minutes | Canal and Daugava, then on foot | Audio guide, then a live guide | Walk in English or German |
| Boat plus electric bus | 95 minutes | Canal and Daugava, then Old Town by bus | Audio guide on both | Bus leaves hourly |
In the colder months the heated historic boat and the panorama boat, with its heated lounge, are the two whose pages mention heating; for the others, ask the operator if the cold worries you. The historic boat stops at sunset, while the panorama boat’s timetable runs into the evening. The Old Town itself is better explored on foot, so see our article on a guided or self-guided walk.
Our recommendation
Book the electric boat tour and bring headphones, unless you want the bar and an evening departure, in which case take the panorama cruise, or want a walk in the same ticket. All options are on the Riga boat tours page.
